Who could have imagined that 5784 was going to look and feel the way it has. Our Jewish community has been shaken to its core in the aftermath of October 7th and the ensuing trauma, rise in antisemitism, hostage crisis and war in Israel. We pray for a swift and complete end to all the suffering, to be replaced with jubilation and celebration.
On Motzei Shabbat Aug 31 we received the terrible news from Israel that 6 beautiful lives, who had survived the awful conditions of captivity, were murdered by Hamas within hours of being saved by the IDF. Mr Jon Goldberg-Polin suggested that at the funeral for his only son that his death not be in vain but rather it should be the start of a revolution of change.
Let's heed the advice of Mr Goldberg Polin, connect with the time of Elul and provide an Aliyah for the Neshamot lost and still in captivity by learning Mishnayot together as a community between now and Erev Rosh Hashana. We will celebrate our collective Torah study in a meaningful 'Yom Iyun', day of learning.
